The Name · The Origin

SHMAIA ܫܡܝܐ

pronounced "Shméya"

In Assyrian (neo-aramaic), my mother tongue, Shmaia is the word for sky, heaven, cosmos. It is metaphorically connected to divine presence, prosperity, peace and harmony.

Shmaia’s Story

Born from a wish to honour nature's healing power

Shmaia brings forward the healing force of nature through herbalism, botanical perfumery and healing arts rooted in ancient wisdom that nurtures vitality.

Shmaia was born from a wish to honour nature’s healing power and to nurture the connection that we always have with the root of our essence that may at times be forgotten in modern-day life.

Shmaia (pronounced “Shméya”) is the word in Assyrian, my mother tongue, for sky – heaven – cosmos – universe. It is metaphorically connected to divine presence, prosperity, peace and harmony.

With Shmaia, I create and share herbal remedies and practices that rekindle and bring forward ancient wisdom for the times we are living in.

In communion with Mother Earth, I wish to open loving doors of the divine to come through with Shmaia

My Process

I dream of a world where we remember our true nature

  • Where we move in tune with our natural rhythm and the gift of simply being alive.

  • Where we see that the nature around us also lives within.

  • Where we remember how to live in tune with our true nature and to be in harmony with ourselves, Mother Earth, divine Source and the tapestry of life, of which we are a mere thread.

Thus, my work is rooted in close relation with the medicines of Earth, to create connection and bring us into harmony with ourselves and all of creation.
As plants grow in the natural world, they help us remember our own inherent nature. Every offering is intended to support our vitality and our connection to our essence, ancestral wisdom, and the medicine that already lives within us.

My process - a guiding pillar

Viriditas The green truth

One of my guiding pillars is the notion of Viriditas, coined by the 12th-century mystic and healer Hildegard von Bingen. In her visions, she saw the divine alive in the verdant energy of nature — a force she called Viriditas, "green truth."

It is the vitalising presence of the divine moving through our veins and inner heart, absorbed through plants and flowers, the earthly and celestial elements, rooted in the light of the sun.

She saw the natural world as a reflection of the divine, and thus tending to nature was a way of tending to one's soul.

Viriditas nurtures both spiritual and physical wellbeing, allowing us to grow, heal and connect. When we stray from our inner heart's truth, we disconnect from divine source and become depleted of Viriditas. Instead, ariditas — dryness — arises, bringing imbalance.

Each offering I create and share is intended to support the flow of Viriditas in us. May these offerings bring ease and guide us in standing in the truth of our hearts — which is essential for the times we are living in today.

Hildegard von Bingen · 12th Century

"There is a is a power that has been since all eternity, and that force and potentiality is green ."

— Hildegard von Bingen

Ariditas

Dryness that arises when we disconnect from our inner heart's truth and from divine source. Depletion, imbalance.

Viriditas

The vitalising green force. Divine presence flowing through us via plants, earth, and sky. Vitality. Connection. Truth.

The Person Behind Shmaia

Meet Natalin

By staying close to Mother Earth, our Plant Elders and listening to Shmaia, I am guided.

  • The Botanical Beginnings

My journey with Shmaia began when I intuitively started creating my own botanical fragrances and noticed how they brought me and others into a state of ease. This spark of curiosity led me to meet Marie-Louise Eklöf, the woman who became my herbalist teacher.

  • Healing Through Sound

From a young age, I was mesmerised by the profound impact of sound and music. It wasn't until I encountered a gong that I slowly began healing my relationship with my own voice which then led me to dive into sound as a therapy. Being an eternal student of vibration helps me see that everything is sound and has its own rhythm just like you and me.

  • Roots & Ancestral Wisdom

Through my Assyrian roots and their rich ancestral heritage, I have been continually reminded of our connection to divine source in all we do. Growing up in secular Sweden made clear how forgotten this connection was and the deep impact that forgetting has on us.

  • The Healing I Carry

Through Marie-Louise's wisdom, I was able to heal myself from heavy menstrual cramps that I had endured since my teens which now allows me to support other women with similar challenges. She was also the one who introduced me to Hildegard von Bingen, who inspires my work deeply to this day.

This set the stage for my unceasing journey with herbal medicines, sound therapy, natural healing arts and ancestral wisdom where I have had the honour of receiving and immersing myself in various teachings and modalities that I now share with those who need it.

What began as an evening practice with a few clients in Stockholm has grown into Shmaia — a living offering to the world.

“Everything that is in the Heavens, on Earth, and under the Earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness.”
